GOOD READS

8 Apr

Notice my little ‘widget’, Good Reads?

On the right hand sidebar….maybe scroll down a little…ok, you see it now?

I just wanted to share a little disclaimer on my ‘to read’ list that I’m sharing here…I know I’ve said it in the past, but I wanted to reiterate it here, since I’m sharing titles that I don’t FULLY ascribe to…I love to garner information from MULTIPLE resources…however, I do NOT embrace EVERYTHING about any given ‘only way’…but instead LOVE to customized and research from good input and experience.

So, that being said, have YOU read any of those books?

You are (a product of) what you eat.

3 Apr

So, obviously, I’m not a salmon…or a miniature tree (a.k.a.: Broccoli). Yet, I do carry around the product of those foods…each nutrient that my body breaks down and uses to repair, nourish and heal my cells, bones, everything. The balance food can bring, and the havoc it can wreak on a body is AMAZING!

When I was eating foods that are INFLAMMATORY, I suffered a lot.

I still deal with sleep apnea. That’s not fun. However, I have been doing better. Just some days it’s bad. Waking up in the middle of the night, from not breathing. Headache. Thankfully, though, not as often.

One of the things I haven’t mentioned in much/any detail is the fact that I have removed SUGAR (refined, white, added) from my life, for the  most part. I’ve had several cups of coffee, in attempts to ‘enjoy’ myself while making changes for the better…and I’m a die hard (well, I WAS a die hard coffee drinker, but I’m also VERY PARTICULAR with my coffee preparation. 4 teaspoons of sugar, two tablespoons of half and half…SEVERAL times a day. I’d usually have 3-4 cups of coffee…ahem. If you do the math…it’s horrifying. I’ll do it for you.

4 teaspoons of sugar 3 times a day = 12 teaspoons of sugar a day (on a low day) (NOT COUNTING ANY ADDED SUGAR in processed foods I’d eat…DON’T EVEN get me started…THAT’S HORRIFYING!)

12 teaspoons of sugar a day times 35 days = 420 teaspoons

Since I’ve been cutting back, and eventually ELIMINATED my sugar intake, I’ve had 88 teaspoons of sugar, in the 35 day period.

Cutting my sugar by 332 teaspoons, not to mention ALL of the processed sugar! WHICH IS UNFATHOMABLY LARGE AMOUNT! I don’t EVEN want to think about it! Cutting sugar cuts INFLAMMATION! YAY!

So, chop! Cutting down my sugar. NEXT. I cut out flour and wheat. WOW, me!

Sugar.

Wheat.

Processed/ready made foods.

OH! And no milk products, either! Really. Especially compared to before.

Rice, potatoes. No more of those.

I just wanted to share that. I hadn’t really talked about it. So, my basic meals consist of fresh veggies, fruit, minimally processed meat (meaning, just butchered and cut up).

Better sleep. Dealing with stress. Walking more. Building muscle.

I feel like a superhero.

Ok. Let’s talk about one hot mess….ME!

30 Mar

No, I don’t mean ‘hot’ like, “Ooo la la” (as my son says to me, when he’s giving me the googly eyes, like he’s in love with me.)

More like ‘hot’, blood pressure up, heart racing ever so slightly, stress building…THAT kind of ‘hot’.

Yeah…that ever elusive ‘balance’ I speak of, and long for, OMG…why is it so difficult to attain? I know it can’t be just me.

At least I HOPE it’s not just me….

We all know, Misery loves company….LOL.

So, I just gotta say, I’m recognizing that trying to ‘hit’ a protein goal EVERY MORNING, within 30 minutes of opening my peepers….and trying to get 50-75 grams of the wonderful stuff in me that soon, is kickin’ my tush! The length of my morning meal, the monotonous chewing, the being FULL, it’s getting hard.

Then, I realized this morning, it’s causing me to STRESS!

OH MY GOODNESS! NONE OF THAT!

Ok…deep breath. STRESS is NOT something I need…in any way, whatsoever.

SO, knowing that, I have made my adjustment. It is LESS important to HIT A GOAL, than it is to be wise in my choices, and nourish myself. I WILL NOT OBSESS and I WILL NOT STRESS. NOPE, Nope, nope!

Wow, look at that…I’m already finding balance! And it’s just barely noon!

Then I realized that I was stressing over not loosing anymore weight, nor any inches since I’ve last measured and weighed. I was masking my devastation  La la la…It doesn’t bother me. (WHAT AM I DOING WRONG!?!?!?!?!) la la la…..and so on.

Oh. Wait. Didn’t I just loose 20 pounds in 30 days? WOW! RIGHT? TWENTY POUNDS! IN 30 DAYS! Give myself a break, already, RIGHT?

Ok…balance…I get it…it’s something to work towards, but not something to expect without a lot of INTENTIONAL LIVING and THINKING and ADJUSTING.

I can do this. However, I am grateful for the reminder that Scriptures give me,

2 Corinthians 10:5

King James Version (KJV)

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

No, this isn’t bible study, but the reminder to take every thought captive, and measure it with God’s Truth is something I want to do always.

God’s Truth about ME, who I am…to Him. THAT is what’s important.

God’s Truth about FOOD. Being created in such amazing harmony with our DESIGNED bodies….what a beautiful thing! If I remember THAT, I’m not going to obsess over ‘getting enough protein’ to meet some goal. WHY is that so hard to remember?

I’ve got such a legalistic mindset sometimes, it tries to detract from my life. Using information to make informed decisions and choices, that’s what I’m supposed to do. It’s a good thing.

Living my life freely and wisely, THAT brings Glory to my Lord, AND grants me the peace and joy to allow my body to function wholly….healthfully.

Ok…thanks for letting me remind myself.

Have a fabulous day!

Be blessed. 😉

LOL…how can it be SO TRUE, the more I learn, the more I don’t know!?

28 Mar

So, I’ve been working on that thing called balance.

“This says” don’t exercise until after 5pm. “That says” don’t even think of eating after 7pm. “The other” says don’t snack.

“Eat THIS much protein”

“DON’T eat CARBS”

Drink THIS

DON’T drink THAT

Murderer of helpless animals (seriously, I was watching a ‘Raw Food’ DVD the other day, and the woman actually said that. I thought that was just teasing people that were vegetarians/vegans, and come to find out, they think I’m a murderer!)

Oh my gosh…the list is LONG, ON TOP OF…………….”DON’T STRESS!”

Excuse my cyber expletives, but WTH!?!?!

HOW CAN SOMEONE NOT STRESS with THAT MESS!?!?

Yes…I speak of this elusive balance.

Yes, what makes me happy, peaceful, fulfilled is likely NOT going to be the exact same thing for YOU.

SO, what’s a person to do?

Here’s what I’ve really decided to do. CHILLAX! FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!

NO, not GIVE up. but relax!

As far as I’m concerned, learning about foods and their fabulous gift to us and our bodies, minds and spirits and using them as I feel we’re intended to. To heal, nourish and enjoy!

So….I came to this deep conclusion due to last nights breakdown. I have been wanting to go swimming. Our local pools Open Swim time is 7-9pm. I was running behind in town, and didn’t have time to eat BEFORE leaving, enough to fill me up for the night WITHOUT overdoing it for the pool…and we’d be swimming until 9pm….so, of course, it’s ‘against the law’ to eat after 7pm…so the STARVING feeling I ALWAYS get after swimming was killing me, just KNOWING I couldn’t even make a healthful choice and eat.

I SERIOUSLY CONTEMPLATED A McDonald’s DIPPED CONE, I KID YOU NOT!

(I haven’t had a craving like that in 30 days!)

After being rather unkind and pissy towards my precious family, already pushing myself past my regular comfort zone, GOING SWIMMING IN THE FIRST PLACE, getting my chubs into a suit and BEING THERE, but now, stressing about the predicament I had put myself in….I cried…and apologized…and decided, THIS STRESS is NOT WORTH IT…and I’m going to make MY OWN choices, without overthinking or worrying.

And I did.

AND, I worked out this morning, at 11. AM. IN THE MORNING. HA HA!

Let me tell you….the 20 minute DVD I did, working on my core and lower back, using a back ball thingy (I have a fractured L5 disc and it causes a LOT of pain if I’m not careful, making core workouts and strengthening difficult.)

I was ACTUALLY happy afterwards. The ‘high’ I got from that gentle yet effective workout was insane and INSPIRING!

So, I have just reaffirmed my quest for MY balance. And it makes me giddy.

What’s up with you…?

I’ve REGROUPED and PUSHED on!

24 Mar

HELLO!

I have returned for another round of sharing and putting stuff out there, so to speak.

It’s been A LONG TIME since I’ve been on here! I wonder if anyone noticed? LOL

I’m gonna have to go through my old posts and catch up on what I was last sharing about.

HOWEVER, what I’m going to share NOW is super exciting!

I’ve continued to read and research and found out a lot. I’m piecing together an effective plan for me, and I’ll share why and how I’ve come up with it. It’s a LOT of hours and days and weeks worth of reading and research. I hope you find it interesting.

Hormones and your body.

Leptin Resistance

Eating for Your Blood Type (we’ve talked about that, I’m pretty sure.)

Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Inflammation

Sleep Apnea

Stress

Those are all VERY important topics that are 100% connected to each other. I say often, that it’;s all very circular. I may recoin that phrase after I lay it all out…but really, it’s all connected…in amazing ways!

What I share WILL NOT be for EVERYONE. No judging on my part, that’s for sure….and on that same note, please, if you’re offended by, or against anything I share here, please be kind when stating so. My purpose here is NOT to hand ANYONE the HOLY GRAIL of weight loss, or fix everyone’s (anyone’s) problems. My only intent is to spread some information to stimulate others to learn more about their bodies and the world they live in.

I do not ‘worry’ about anything I personally share here, because the long and short of MY perspective on food is EAT good food. No doctor, or dietitian can say that I am supporting a dangerous diet fad, because I am not. I am simply sharing and exploring the science of food and it’s effects on my body, and hoping it inspires others.

On one hand, I use materials from ‘diets’ or ‘lifestyles’ that can be/become extreme, and even, in my opinion, unhealthful…but I am particularly using the SCIENCE from their research and findings and studies, to customize and create a workable lifestyle of HEALTH for me.

So, that being said, are you READY for some info? Are you ready for some fun!?

Next post will be all about ME, and a streamlined list of my resources, including links to websites and books.

Leave some feedback, if you will, and let me know what you’re interested in!

Ok…so BACK to the ONE SIZE does NOT FIT ALL topic.

12 Feb

So, I may have to revisit this topic often.

I thought I ‘got it’…but I was hit with an unexpected response the other day, and I lost sight of ‘One Size does NOT FIT ALL’…and I flubbed.

I was visiting a friend, and I off-handedly mentioned the book I was looking at, and asked if my friend had ever heard of it. She very quickly, in a not so delicate manner shared her,  ahem, MAJOR DISINTEREST in my book, ‘eating right 4 your blood type’…

Don’t get me wrong…she’s a really nice woman. I like her a LOT…and our daughters are friends.

But I think, since I was pretty much basically mentioning it in reference to MY life and merely asking if she’d heard of it…her response really SHOCKED me…and left me feeling ‘defensive’…if you will. I had brought my book with me, because I was still writing my shopping list, and I was trying to be sure I was looking for new items to try on my ‘HIGHLY BENEFICIAL’ list. That’s all. I wasn’t there, trying to convert her…or tell her my way was the only way…or anything.

However, her DEEPLY emotional response left me stunned. I stuttered, “Uh, why do you feel that way?”

She replied, “I just know that there are foods I am NOT willing to give up. So, why bother.”

Ok…right….I remember, I got this…”So, don’t”….Right?

I wasn’t asking HER to do it. I wasn’t implying she should. I was sharing.

HOWEVER…what I really started to realize is, as people,

  1. We are constantly ‘comparing’ what WE do to what OTHERS do, and reconciling it…and evaluating it.
  2. People TEND to think, “I know it all”, or “So and so THINKS they know it all” therefore, we have preëmptive responses.
  3. Peoples relationship with FOOD is almost as intimate as their, ahem, excuse me for saying so, but, really…their sex lives.

Ok…chew on that for a second.

Breathe.

Just think.

Ok…What do YOU say to that?

Anyhoo…after her very clear statement that she was in no way interested in even HEARING about ‘ER4YBT’….the shock of her response sent me into a defensive tailspin. When she replied she wasn’t willing to change what she was doing, I could have just left it. Should have. But I didn’t. Because that’s not how I see the concept of ER4YBT…I see it as an arsenal of tools that I can arm myself with, that equips my body to DO WHAT IT’S DESIGNED TO DO. Fine, if you’re gonna eat ‘whatever you want’…doesn’t it make sense to support your body the best you can?

Yes…I should’ve left it at, “I am not interested, and I don’t even want to hear about it!”

I will, as well, in the future.

And, as I think about it more and as I research more, I will keep in mind what I’ve come to understand/believe about people and their food relationships. I have one. I had one. I like my new one better. Plain….simple.

What kind of relationship do YOU have with FOOD?

Is food a fill in for something that’s missing?

Is food a stimulant that is purely pleasurable and comforting?

Is food a tool?

A medicine?

A purposeful part of your life and lifestyle?

Be blessed.
